6. | The Emigrator Johann Georg Windemuth (1.Maria1) was born on 11 May 1711 in Pfungstadt Kreis Darmstadt Hessen, Europa; died on 19 Dec 1782 in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. Notes:
On May 11, 1711, Johann George Windemuth was born in the southwest region of the Rhineland-Palatinate just east of the Rhine River in Pfungstadt, Germany. Johann was the youngest son of Johann Christoph Windemuth, a wainwright, and Mary Marguerite Kleppinger, a tailor. It was a challenging time to grow up in the Palatinate region of Germany in those years. The many years of war with their French neighbors really took its toll. Other factors like severe winters crippled the local economy. The economy was directly affected by the weather dependent agricultural industry. It is no wonder why so many ?poor Palatines?, like Johann George Windemuth, decided to leave everything behind to take the treacherous journey to North America.
Johann?s journey to North America started in May of 1736. He took a small crowded scow up the Rhine River to the port city of Rotterdam, Holland. Confronted with an endless barrage of tolls, depleting all or most of your resources was inevitable. The feverish demand to get to North America fed the economic growth of the bustling Colonial City of Philadelphia. As the existing pool of laborers and craftsmen were running low, the influx of these Palatine Germans really filled that void. This new bond between Palatines and the growth of Philadelphia created a new trade that was no different than indentured servitude. The Palatines were the unintended architects of this new trade, where their debt was sold to the highest bidder. They were mandated to work off their debt, which in many cases lasted 3 or more years. It is debatable who ended up with the better part of this arrangement. Cheap labor or temporarily relinquishing your freedom to live free in a new fertile land. It was only around 30 years later that the bargain was tested as the Colonists were preparing to declare their independence from Great Britain.
The path to freedom starts in Rotterdam. It is there that brokers traded the freedom of these Germans in exchange for passage to Colonial North America . Fueled by the promise of a fresh start, Johann and thousands of others ended up trading their freedom in exchange for the cost of the trip. He quickly made arrangements with Captain Robert Harle whose ship was named ?Harle?. Harle had a decent reputation, but he, too, could not escape the pressure to maximize profit at the expense of the desperate Palatines. Once all this business was sorted out, it was off to London. While in London, the passengers were immedietaly expected to pledge their allegiance to the King of England in exchange for the right of way to the Colonies. The Crown was desperately hoping to flood the Colonies with presumed loyalists.
During the summer of 1736, Johann and others flirted with death across the Altantic on the ship Harle. Overcrowding, rancid provisions and sea sickness were only some of the dangers. This was certainly not a deterrent to Johann. After four harrowing months, Johann finally arrived in Philadelphia. Despite coming from a rural community, life in the city of Philadelphia was likely more comfortable and familiar than expected. By 1736, there were thousands of German speaking people residing in Philadelphia. Johann and his family became acquainted with Johan Peter Bernhardt and his family. Most likely Johann George?s father struck up a friendship with Johan Peter Berhardt. There is the possibility they were acquainted back in Germany. This relationship eventually led to Johann George marrying the daughter of Johan Peter Bernhardt, Margaret Elizabeth Bernhardten in 1739. Johann George was 25 and Margaret Elizabeth 18 at the time of their marriage. A few years later in 1741, Johan?s youngest daughter, Maria Catharine, ended up marrying a young Palatine man named Caspar Shaver (later to be known as Caspar Shafer).
This new alliance, the Wintermute-Shafer family, was now ready to build a new future together. They unleashed themselves from the shackles of debt and raised enough money to lease some land. While many German immigrants looked to settle in Pennsylvania. They decided to settle in the ?wilderness? of New Jersey. They made a deal with the London Company who were trading properties that were part of the William Penn tract. One of the members of the London Company was Dr. John Fothergill, a very close friend of Benjamin Franklin. Some of that unsold land ended up in Western New Jersey, in what is now called Sussex County. They chose to settle in a small village called Stillwater that was part of the town of Hardwick, New Jersey. The alluvial and limestone rich land they chose was along the Paulinskill River and across from a powerful spring called The Big Spring. Their risk was certainly paying off, but all they had to do was get there.
The not so easy path to Stillwater was following a trail north east along the ?Blue Mountain? ridge (now known as Kitattinny). This was a risky journey that required tenacity and the basic knowledge of survival. They would have had to negotiate with rough terrain and their new cohabitants, the Lenape Indians. They ended up in Stillwater sometime in 1742. They did not waste any time settling in. They quickly built a rudimentary log cabin and began clear cutting fields for farming. The Shafers and the Wintermutes evolved into a productive and successful family business enterprise. By 1755, Johann had four children - his oldest was Elizabeth Snook, the 2nd child was Margaret Kreter, his first son was George and the youngest was Peter. It was at that time he decided to build a stone house along the Paulinskill river. A few years later he built a fulling mill along the river, which is said to be the first or one of the first in Sussex county. Eventually, his son Peter operated the mill and was able to build his own stone house (now known as Bonnie Brook Farm) on the road with an eye shot of his father?s house. While history paints a picture that Johann was in his brother-in-law?s (Caspar Shafer?s) shadow, there is an untold story about how great this man really was. A man whose dreams came true and died free in a country that was built on courage, hope and the promise of prosperity. He remained in Stillwater the rest of his life and was buried in the Stillwater Cemetery on December 19, 1782. He was survived by his wife, 5 children and 15 grandchildren. Three of his grandchildren were born within just a few months prior to his passing. The Windemuth aka Wintermute family is alive and well today. They are very proud of their heritage and the Windemuth family organization has come to visit the home many times over the years. Stillwater would not be the community it is today without Johann George Wintermute.

From The Wintermute Family History:
Frederick was listed January, 1783, as being a member of the Reformed Association od Hardwick. He served as constable for Hardwick Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, in 1776. He is on record for supplying services and supplies during the
American Revolution in 1780 and 1781. George Windemuth named Frederick Snover as one of "my trusty friends".
From "The Snover Family" compiled by Edward P. Stone Sr., Amundsen Pub.Co., 1976, and in the NSDAR Library (information copied and sent to me by James Kerr) - "Frederick Snover was born in America.... The place of his birth, as well as where he
received his education, has not yet been determined." "..was a member of the Reformed Association of Hardwick." "Mister Snover was a zealous patriot, and supplied services and supplies during the revolution." Birth and death dates from this
book. His 3rd m.was performed by Joshua Swayze, J. P.
Information from Robert Moore, Canada : place of birth - "likely Trappe, PA"
In the History of Sussex and Warren Counties by James P. Snell (pub 1881) Frederick and Jacob settled in Hardwick Township (Now Warren County ) as early as 1735 or 1740. This notation seems to be in error as Frederick was born in Penn in 1743
however the family may have been there as early as 1750 and most certainly by 1763 when Frederick was married. Just who Jacob was is unclear at this time but he was likely Frederick's first cousin, a son of John Heinich Snover The name
Schnauber was Anglicized to Snover in 1764. Frederick served in the Continental Army during the Revolution, receiving pay during portions of the period from August 1779 to 1787 (He has been recognized by the DAR) His uncle Georg Philip
Wintermute was a Loyalist and his first cousins Philip, John, Peter, Benjamin and Abraham Wintermutes were members of Loyalist regiment "The Butlers Rangers" and were regarded as heroes in the Niagara area of Ontario where they settled after
the Revolution. ***Frederick was a constable for Hardwick Township in 1776. Frederick was a member of Hardwick Lutheran Church at Stillwater.
Frederick's will was dated 23 June 1828 and is contained in Warren County Probate Records (G.S. #566,393 No. 1920)

16. | Philip Wintemute (3.Georg2, 1.Maria1) was born in 1742 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died in 1809 in Bertie, Ontario, Canada. Notes:
He served in Butler's Rangers throughout the Revolution and subsequently settled in Bertie Township. He was listed in a return of the Loyalists in Captain George Dame's Company at Niagara on 30 November 1783, his age being given as 41.
[Haldimand Papers, B105-A:385] His land petition [W2:97] dated at Niagara 26 January 1797 only states that he served six years in Butler's Rangers and that at the reduction of the Corps he settled near Ft Erie.
He married Mrs Edia Allen, widow of John Allen. Her petition [W2:64] is not dated but was received 27 January 1797. She was named in it as Edia Wintermute, wife of Philip Wintermute but late widow of John Allen. She and her late husband came
into the Province in 1785 with two children. In a subsequent petition [W4:58] dated at Niagara 7 February 1797 she stated that she and her late husband John Allen came into the Province "about nine years ago" and settled on a lot of land at
the head of the Chippawa, but that her husband "soon after dying" left her with a "large" family of children.
It is apparent from Philip's will that he did not have any children or, at least, none who survived him. He did not mention his wife in his will so it would appear that she pre-deceased him. His will, on file at St Catherines, is dated 17
June 1809 and describes him as being of Bertie. He named: "my nephew Phillip Wintermute the eldest son of my brother Leonard Wintermute; my brother Abraham Wintermute; my nephew Abraham and niece Anna; son and daughter of my brother Abraham,
to have Lot 9 in the Front Concession off Bertie, 60 acres, when the become of age; my nephew Phillip Wintermute son of my brother Peter Wintermute 260 acres, being Lot 12 Concession 1 of Dorchester; my nephew Phillip Wintermute son of my
brother Benjamin Wintermute all my claim of interest to a certain tract lying near the Grand River and on the Indian lands which I purchased from the late Captain Joseph Brant; and my niece Polly Wintermute, daughter of my brother Benjamin
Wintermute". He named as executors Christian Ryslay and John Warren Jr, both of Bertie. Witnesses were Benjamin Wintermute, William Powell and John Putman. The will was proved 10 October 1809 on the oath of John Putman of Bertie, gentleman.

noted, however, that a family of Windecker's, also tory, lived in the Wyoming Valley before the Revolution not far from where the Wintermute's lived. John's name appears on the tax lists for the Exeter District of that Valley for 1776 and
1777. He served in Butler's Rangers, and at the reduction of that Corps he settled in Bertie. His household is listed in a return of the Loyalists in Captain Bernard Frey's Company of the Rangers at Niagara 30 November 1783. [Haldimand
Papers B105-A:381] The list names Corporal John Wintmot aged 27 and Mary Wintmot 24 followed by three entries with the name Wintmot written, but for which no first names or ages are given. If the age given for John was 37, it would be more in
accordance with his baptismal record.
A land petition from him dated 9 July 1795 [W3:137] states that he served in Butler's Rangers as a corporal and that he has a family consisting of five children. No mention was made of a wife. The following certificate of J. Ball, J.P., on
file with the petition, indicates a second marriage for John. "Newark, 20 March 1797. I do hereby certify that corporal John Wintermute served in Butler's Rangers during the was; that he had a family before the year 1789 consisting of a wife
and eight children; that his wife is the daughter of a Loyalist Hannah Lybs who came in the year 1778".
The "Loyalist Hannah Lybs" can only mean Hannah Sypes, or Sipes, who did enter Niagara in 1778. This would mean that John had married a sister of the wife of his brother Peter, but additional evidence should be found to corroborate such a
marriage. It is noted, however, that two of John's daughters were Hannah and Eve, names which were used in the Sipes family.
John subsequently married Nancy Leopard (leppard, etc) but whether this was before or after he moved to Humberstone is not known. Documents on file with Nancy's land petition [L:3:35] indicate that she was married to John after 9 May 1797 and
more likely after 1800. A power of attorney dated at Humberstone, 22 October 1832 states that "I, Nancy Wintemute of Humberstone, widow of John Wintemute late of same place, yeoman, deceased, and daughter of William Leopard, at his birth of
Bucks County in the State of Pennsylvania, known before marriage as Nancy Leopard, do appoint Andrew Mercer of the town of York as my attorney to receive for me title to the south part of Lot 23 Concession 4 of Scarboro' containing 100 acres".
Witnesses were John Wintemute (Jr) and Aaron Doan.

There may be a mistake in the will because the Anthony land was located in the Lot number nine of the third concession. Although this may have been another parcel.
I think brother peter or Philip may have left lot 9 of 3rd conns to her (Sarah Anthony) later.

Order in Council 16 April 1811 names her as "Elizabeth Petrie, wife of Joseph Petrie and daughter of Philip Wintermute, U.E." The order was based on her land petition of 31 January 1811 [P10:10] in which she was described as wife of Joseph
Petree of "Haldimand County, Niagara District, U.E." She took the required oathes before Benajah Mallory, J.P., of the London District and requested that he be permitted to act as her agent to locate her land. A will for an older Joseph Petrey
is on file at St Catherines. The will, dated 29 May 1804, describes the testator as "Joseph Petrey of Clinton, County of Lincoln". It mentions only "my son Joseph Pettrey" and "my grandson Joseph Hilts". The grandson was left the bulk of the
estate which included Lots 9 & 10 Con 7 of Clinton. The executors were the grandson and "friend" Adam Miller. There are no papers on file which indicate the date of probate.

29. | George Wintermute (6.Johann2, 1.Maria1) was born on 8 Jul 1748; died on 8 Jan 1837; was buried in 1837 in Buried in Redstone Baptist Church cemetery. Notes:
T. Michael Louden has written:
"I have found the grave of George Wintermute and check the tombstone against the book. George is buried between the graves of Mary Wintermute and Ashfordby Wintermute (his son). Who is Mary Wintermute? The stone is very faded marble but
looks like it says:
"Mary
wife of
?A? Wintermute
died
?1? Jan 181?4?
Aged 5????..."
rest is unreadable but is shaped like the rest of age and a quote of some sort in smaller print as was the style at the time. The are no grave markers either side of these three or in front or behind. I assume these are filled graves but
without current markers. If I assume that Mary is a previously undocumented wife of Ashfordby it raises the question of why they were not buried adjacent to one another instead of with a space between them where George is buried 10 years
later.
Any ideas on who Mary "wife of Wintermute" is?

108. | Abraham Wintemute (24.Benjamin3, 3.Georg2, 1.Maria1) was born in 1793. Notes:
His date of baptism was April 12, 1793. The baptism was performed by the Rector of St Mark's Niagara-on-the-Lake
Officially, Abraham died in November of 1812 from an illness contracted while on duty as a gunner in the 2nd Regiment of Provincial Artillery. At that time he was over 21 years of age. He died unmarried.
Robert Moore (77 Metcalfe Street; St Thomas Ontario N5R 3K6; Tel 519-631-6065; e-mail rmoore@wwdc.com) believes that he did not die, but that his father claimed that he died and applied for land on behalf of his son Abram who was killed in
the war of 1812. Then Abraham "went west"
Born c1793 (G/S) transcript, may be incorrect, and reflect the age (97) given in Cemetery transcripts. The Kilmer Book states that he died age 97 thus born in 1793 but the info was taken from the cemetery transcripts as well.

Married by A. Dobbie J.P. London District Marriage Register page 67.
Abraham petitioned for land in 1844 and received as a free grant the West ˝ of Lot 22 Concession 9 Bayham Township Elgin County He must have sold the land shortly thereafter as he purchased from the Crown the South ˝ of Lot 23 Concession 12
Dereham Township Oxford County in April 1846.
There is no record in the Elgin County Land registry office of him owning any of lot 22 Concession 9 Bayham The crown patents were issued in 1844 for the North ˝ of the lot and in 1849 for the South ˝ (many early land transactions were never
registered and eventually a subsequent owner had to petition the Crown for a patent event tho he might have acquired the property many years previously.)
Grace Noad advises that Abram was a witness at the marriage of Philip Kilmer (brother to Elizabeth Kilmer Wintermute) to Peter Laur.
In the 1851 census Abraham age 50 is living in Dereham Township Oxford County, occupation shingle maker with wife Elizabeth and 9 children
He is shown on the 1857 Oxford County Tremaines map on 50 acres South ˝ of South ˝ of Lot 23 Concession 12 Dereham. (Second lot west of Brownsville-Corinth Road on the Bayham Dereham Town line).
At the time of the 1861 census Abram was still in Dereham Township. In the 1861 Agricultural Census of Dereham, Abram is shown on 50 acres of Lot 23 Concession 12 with 25 acres cleared of which 19 acres was in crops and 6 in pasture with value
of farm at $800.
A land search of South ˝ of Lot 23 Concession 12 Dereham shows that the South ˝ was not patented until 15 July 1862 and then by a "Robert Peacock." How much legal interest Abram had in the property is not known. Was he just a squatter or had
he acquired the land and just not gotten it patented ?? (check Dereham township papers and assessment records if there are any)
Abram is shown on Malahide Township Concession 8 Lot 34 North ˝ of East ˝ 50 acres on 1864 Tremaines Map. A Title search does not show him as being an owner so he was likely just a tenant. There is no record in the Elgin County Land registry
office of him owning any of lot 22 Concession 9 Bayham The crown patents were issued in 1844 for the North ˝ of the lot and in 1849 for the South ˝ (many early land transactions were never registered and eventually a subsequent owner had to
petition the Crown for a patent event tho he might have acquired the property many years previously.)

151. | Abraham Wintermute (31.Peter3, 6.Johann2, 1.Maria1) was born on 14 Jul 1801; died on 6 Sep 1869. Notes:
[This section on Abraham was listed in the original book in this place. We feel it was an error in the original book to be located here and one that we were at a loss as to how to correct. We were not sure exactly where he should fit.
But if you read on page 447, it tells you that Peter Wintermute and Esther Rhodes were the parents of eight children; one of them, Charles, died at an early age. There was no mention of a child named Abraham. Also, as you read about Abraham
it tells you that he had a sister named Sarah. Peter Wintermute had no children named Sarah. One other point is that there were no genealogy codes in the original book after the names of anyone in this section. It was as if Abraham got
misplaced somehow by the printer and was just placed in the book at this spot for lack of a better place. So we were at a loss as to where Abraham fits into the family history. We feel that he does not belong here but we don't really know
where he does fit in. So we just left him here just as he appeared in the original book. You can decide for yourself.]
They were members of the Presbyterian Church. He had one sister and her name was Sarah. She died while a young woman. Abram and wife were faithful Christians, very modest and quiet in their religious life. At his death it was the
remark of one of the most wicked men of the place, "I would rather stand his chances of Heaven than any man I know." He was a hard working man. He began life with very little means, but by industry and economy he soon was able to buy a farm.
He and his wife made for themselves a comfortable home.

Harold Van Auken writes (July 1998)
"We went to Stuben County, NY on our vacation at the beginning of July.
Sara, Henry, their daughter Hannah Naomi and Henry’s sister Eva Anna are buried together in the Glenview Cemetery, Pultney, Stuben Co., NY. Also, the wife of their son Arthur, L. Amelia who died on Aug. 30, 1890, is buried just behind them.
The area essentially has not changed in a hundren and fifty years. They have modern appointments, but the population density is very low, and the area is very rural and underdeveloped to say the least. It was enlightening to see how the towns
we have read about are related to each other and to understand the distances between them.
We stopped at the County Clerks office and looked through the deed books. The first record of a land purchase by Henry B. Wintermute was on June 1, 1842. He bought 100 acres for $421.00.
Henry also bounght 42+ acres from his son-in-law Charles Brown and daughter Drusilla on Dec. 6, 1856 for $1700. Guess this is the money they used to start up with in IL. Drusilla's mother, Sara had a brother, John W. Van Auken who moved to IL.
Also, Drusilla had two first cousins who lived there."
Certain records say that January 10, 1783, a number of persons, calling themselves members of the Reformed Association of Hardwick, signed articles of religious faith.... And in an entry in the church records, under date June 13, 1823, the
congregation met and were organized into a regular Presbyterian Church, of which Isaac and Henry Bernhardt Wintermute were made ruling elders.
Henry married Sarah Van Auken on 6 Jun 1811 in Sussex County, New Jersey. Sarah (daughter of Nathaniel Van Auken and Mary Maria Westbrook) was born on 1 Mar 1792 in Wallpack, Sussex Co., New Jersey; died on 5 Apr 1862 in Pultney, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
