Generation: 1
1. | John Peter Bernhardt was born in in Kezenheim in the Grafschaft Bolander Europa (Rhenish Bavaria; died on 28 Aug 1748; was buried in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Sussex Co., NJ. Notes:
He was the first person buried in the Stillwater cemetery, where the old German Church was years after erected. The inscription reads as follows:
" Here Rests
The John Peter Bernhardt who was born in the Kezenheim in the Grafschaft Bolander Europa (Rhenish Bavaria). Came with his frau and children to America in the year 1731 and died December 28, 1748."
From the history of Sussex county we are told that John Peter Bernhardt first settled in Philadelphia in 1730, and in 1742 located in the wilderness where the village of Stillwater now stands. (The above dates are evidently wrong, as the
inscription on the tombstone of Bernhardt and his daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, who married John George Windemuth, both say they emigrated in 1731, and it seems to be as evident that he made his settlement at Stillwater at an earlier date than
that given, we think not later than 1736.) Sussex history also says that Peter Windemuth came about the same time, an inexcusable error, as there was no Emigrator by the name of Peter.

4. | Christina Elisabetha Bernhardt (1.John1) was born in in Kezenheim in the Grafschaft Bolander Europa (Rhenish Bavaria. Notes:
17 June 1740, Johan Christoffel Dennemarken and Christina Elizabetha appear as husband and wife at a baptism in the Machackemeck Dutch Reformed Church records. They appear as witnesses, 5 May 1745, 27 Apr 1746, 22 Mar 1752, and 9 June
1754 in the Walpack Dutch Reformed Church records. It would appear that they may have not had children as none were found in the church records in the years in which their names appeared as witnesses. There was a second Christoffel Dennemarken
who married Lea Swartout and they had a son, Johan Christoffel baptised 22 Mar 1752 and Christoffel Dennemarken and his wife, Christina Elisabeth Berhardin were the witnesses. This Christoffel Dennemarken and his wife, Lea Swartout also had
children baptised in 1747, 1749, and 1755. There is no further record found of Christopher Denmark and his wife, Christina Elisabetha after the 9 June 1754 baptism when they were witnesses.
Christina married Johan Christoffel Dennemarken before 17 Jun 1740. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

5. | Jacobina Bernhardt (1.John1) Notes:
From Kelsey Jones:
Jacobina Bernhard was a witness, 11 Feb 1750 with Jan Kermer at a baptism at the Walpack Dutch Reformed Church at Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey. She married Jan Arrison (Arason, Aerson, Aronson, etc.) sometime before 30 June 1754 when
they were witnesses at a baptism for her niece. Their own child was baptised 27 Oct 1754 at Walpack. Jan is related to have been a widower with children at the time of their marriage. If this is true, he has no children by a first wife
baptised at Walpack nor does he or a first wife appear as witnesses to any baptisms at Walpack. There are no further baptisms found for Jan and Jacobina at Walpack, perhaps because of their removal to Shamokin, Pennsylvania in central
Pennsylvania on the Susquehanna River. Their area of settlement was the frontier and Indian hostilities preceeding and during the Revolutionary War are related to have caused their return to Stillwater. Little is known of their return, whether
they preceeded some of the worst hostilities or fled with many other settlers to New Jersey when the Indians and British massacred hundreds of settlers at Wyoming, Pennsylvania near present Wilkes Barre. I have found no further records of this
family. Some printed records relate that his name was Jeptha, but in the two church records cited above that I have found his name is Jan in both instances. Pennsylvania records need to be consulted. In The Wintermute Genealogy it is related
that George Wintermute b. 8 July 1748 m. Anna Arason b. 6 May 1750 presumed daughter of Jeptha Arason. W. B. McCormick of Brownsville, Pennsylvania related that her birth was 23 May 1751 as recorded in the family bible. The inscription on her
tombstone reads born 6 May 1750 died 19 Feb 1809 58y 9m 13d. She is buried at Stillwater. I do not know if she was a child of Jacobina or a first wife of Jan. It is related that Jan and Jacobina had eight children, but I have found records of
only five.

10. | George Wintermute (2.Johanna2, 1.John1) was born on 8 Jul 1748; died on 8 Jan 1837; was buried in 1837 in Buried in Redstone Baptist Church cemetery. Notes:
T. Michael Louden has written:
"I have found the grave of George Wintermute and check the tombstone against the book. George is buried between the graves of Mary Wintermute and Ashfordby Wintermute (his son). Who is Mary Wintermute? The stone is very faded marble but
looks like it says:
"Mary
wife of
?A? Wintermute
died
?1? Jan 181?4?
Aged 5????..."
rest is unreadable but is shaped like the rest of age and a quote of some sort in smaller print as was the style at the time. The are no grave markers either side of these three or in front or behind. I assume these are filled graves but
without current markers. If I assume that Mary is a previously undocumented wife of Ashfordby it raises the question of why they were not buried adjacent to one another instead of with a space between them where George is buried 10 years
later.
Any ideas on who Mary "wife of Wintermute" is?

25. | Andrew (John?) Arison (5.Jacobina2, 1.John1) was born in 1750 in NJ. Notes:
This information is from: mike_louden@email.msn.com (T. Michael Louden)
There is an Andrew Arison who is identified in some Fayette Co., PA information as being a child of the first Arrison in New Jersey. (They do not give the first name for his father.) For that to be true he would need to be a child of Jan
Arrason. I have a second reference for the same person (based on dates, spouse and children names) that refers to him as John Arison. I suspect the second may have confused the son and fathers names or even the grandfathers (Jan = John). I will
refer to him as Andrew or "Andrew (John?)" for now until I have more information.
Andrew moved from NJ to Loudoun Co., VA before 1780 and married Ann Davis. One of their children John Arison then moves to Fayette Co., PA where he lives next door to and is buried with George Wintermute who is Jan Arrason's son-in-law, In
Redstone Cem.. George Wintermute would be his uncle if I am correct in Andrew being Jan Arrason's son.
Andrew married Ann Davis in VA. Ann was born in in Loudoun, VA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

62. | Abraham Wintermute (12.Peter3, 2.Johanna2, 1.John1) was born on 14 Jul 1801; died on 6 Sep 1869. Notes:
[This section on Abraham was listed in the original book in this place. We feel it was an error in the original book to be located here and one that we were at a loss as to how to correct. We were not sure exactly where he should fit.
But if you read on page 447, it tells you that Peter Wintermute and Esther Rhodes were the parents of eight children; one of them, Charles, died at an early age. There was no mention of a child named Abraham. Also, as you read about Abraham
it tells you that he had a sister named Sarah. Peter Wintermute had no children named Sarah. One other point is that there were no genealogy codes in the original book after the names of anyone in this section. It was as if Abraham got
misplaced somehow by the printer and was just placed in the book at this spot for lack of a better place. So we were at a loss as to where Abraham fits into the family history. We feel that he does not belong here but we don't really know
where he does fit in. So we just left him here just as he appeared in the original book. You can decide for yourself.]
They were members of the Presbyterian Church. He had one sister and her name was Sarah. She died while a young woman. Abram and wife were faithful Christians, very modest and quiet in their religious life. At his death it was the
remark of one of the most wicked men of the place, "I would rather stand his chances of Heaven than any man I know." He was a hard working man. He began life with very little means, but by industry and economy he soon was able to buy a farm.
He and his wife made for themselves a comfortable home.
Abraham married Mary Osborn on 24 Nov 1822. Mary was born on 27 Apr 1806; died on 6 Oct 1867. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Harold Van Auken writes (July 1998)
"We went to Stuben County, NY on our vacation at the beginning of July.
Sara, Henry, their daughter Hannah Naomi and Henry’s sister Eva Anna are buried together in the Glenview Cemetery, Pultney, Stuben Co., NY. Also, the wife of their son Arthur, L. Amelia who died on Aug. 30, 1890, is buried just behind them.
The area essentially has not changed in a hundren and fifty years. They have modern appointments, but the population density is very low, and the area is very rural and underdeveloped to say the least. It was enlightening to see how the towns
we have read about are related to each other and to understand the distances between them.
We stopped at the County Clerks office and looked through the deed books. The first record of a land purchase by Henry B. Wintermute was on June 1, 1842. He bought 100 acres for $421.00.
Henry also bounght 42+ acres from his son-in-law Charles Brown and daughter Drusilla on Dec. 6, 1856 for $1700. Guess this is the money they used to start up with in IL. Drusilla's mother, Sara had a brother, John W. Van Auken who moved to IL.
Also, Drusilla had two first cousins who lived there."
Certain records say that January 10, 1783, a number of persons, calling themselves members of the Reformed Association of Hardwick, signed articles of religious faith.... And in an entry in the church records, under date June 13, 1823, the
congregation met and were organized into a regular Presbyterian Church, of which Isaac and Henry Bernhardt Wintermute were made ruling elders.
Henry married Sarah Van Auken on 6 Jun 1811 in Sussex County, New Jersey. Sarah (daughter of Nathaniel Van Auken and Mary Maria Westbrook) was born on 1 Mar 1792 in Wallpack, Sussex Co., New Jersey; died on 5 Apr 1862 in Pultney, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
