- According to Dona Wilson Johnson, Sally, Richard's stepmother who raised him, left him the family farm when she died in 1900. In 1904, he sold the farm and moved the family to Nebraska. Stella remembered that when Richard moved the family ,he sold all of her grandmother's beautiful Haviland China among other things. Stella always refered to the farm as her grandmother's plantation. She said they had slaves who stayed with them even after they were freed in 1865.
