- In 1849, Philander Murray, together with some other young men, went to Boston and bought a sailing vessel, the Harriet Rockwell, and sailed for California 'round the horn". Later he went again, this time via the isthmus and bought a foundry in
Ausable, New York across Lake Champlain and conducted a successful business; also meeting and marrying the village school teacher. Miss Martha Patterson, a graduate of Keeseville Academy. Later in the 1880's Philander Murray sold out and moved
west to Rock Falls, Illinois.
