Uncle John Wolfe remembers, " The nighe that brother Charlie died three times. His heart would speed up to a tremendous rate the heart and breathing stop. He had measles and whooping cough at the same time. He was one year old. Dad would just
not let him go. He put him in hot water, pummeled and spanked him and the heart would start again. The doctor would not come to see him, saying Dad was doing everything possible. He would not let Mother in the room. I kept the water hot. After
the third ressurection he told me to go to bed, that the crisis was past.

reference, TRAILS WEST TO RED WILLOW COUNTY NEBRASKA by Robert T. Ray and Lois Rutledge

In 1878, Robert Thomas, Verdon Glandon, Ed Leash and Charlie Hoag, made a pleasure trip from Illiinois and liking the country, they all took land. He was a contractor and builder, being one of the first in Indianola. He helped to put up many
of the first buildings such as school houses, churches, businesses, and homes. He was a charter member of the Congregational Church in Indianola, a member of the Old Settlers' Association, the Modern Woodman, the Eastern Star and the Masonic
Lodges. He died at his home just west of town, after being in poor health for over two years.

Uncle John Wolfe, " G-grandfather Puckett told Dad (Asa Wolfe), ""I don't know why you want to marry that Thomas girl. All your sons will be bald headed."" True, to the third generation."

Ina Mae Wolfe remembers that when grandpa Bob Thomas was old, he began to think that people were trying to steal his carpenters tools. To save them he began burying them, and then he would forget and think that they were stolen. When the family
went to visit, Asa took Ina around the yard looking for signs of places that had recently dug up in the yard. Then they would recover the buried tools.

      Pioneer Builder Answers Call

Robert H. Thomas, pioneer builder and farmer of Indianola and Red Willow County, died Monday afternoon at his home just west of town. On Sunday he had eaten a hearty dinner and was taken sick some time during the night. Monday morning
Mr. and Mrs Wolfe called the doctor for him but he was unable to do more than relieve Mr. Thomas temporarily.

Mr. Thomas had been in poor health for the past two years and his death was not unexpected, although it is, nevertheless, quite a shock to his family. He was seriously ill shortlu before the death of Mrs. Thomas two months ago, but
appeared to gain strength again. His mind has been clouded the last few months and never seemed to realize that Mrs. Thomas was gone.

Mr. Thomas was one of four young men who came to this country together in the late seventies and homesteaded. From this experience came a friendship that has endured as long as they lived. V.J. Glandon is the only remaining member of
the quartet. C.B. Hoag, another member, died three years ago.

Mr. Thomas built many houses in and around Indianola and McCook, among which is the old Indianola high school building which, after 45 years of service, is still in use and is in fairy good shape. He was generous to a fault, a good
neighborand a loving husband and father. He leaves a son and two daughters; Robert Jr., of Puyallup, Wash., Mrs. A.A. Wolfe of Kanawha Iowa, and Mrs. E.H. Korb of Indianola.

The community has suffered a severe loss and we extend our sincere sympany to his family.

Robert married Kate DUNNING on 15 Mar 1883. Kate (daughter of Cyrus DUNNING and Lucy Ursula WHEELER) was born on 21 Jun 1857 in near Mound City, MO; died on 16 May 1931 in Indianola, NE. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    4. 7.  Kate DUNNING was born on 21 Jun 1857 in near Mound City, MO (daughter of Cyrus DUNNING and Lucy Ursula WHEELER); died on 16 May 1931 in Indianola, NE.

      Notes:

According to Uncle John Wolfe, there were 10 or 12 Thomas graves of children in the cemetery at Indianola, Nebraska. He also says, Grandmother praticed abortion. When dying she asked Mother, "Do you think I will go to heaven? " This would be confirmed by the 1900 census where Kate said that she had 11 births, three living.

Ina Mae Wolfe remembers that when she was very young and the family went to Indianola for Grandma Kate Dunning Thomas's funeral, Ina broke out in a terrible rash. Grandpa Bob Thomas took her around the yard asking finding out exactly what
plants she had touched while she was out in the yard. It turned out that she had been bitten by bedbugs instead. Because of the rash, Ina was sent over to stay with Mary, the former foster child of Bob and Kate Thomas and so missed the
      funeral.

"My first view of Indianola was the 25th of April '78 (1878). It was a very nice looking clean, little place-- a store, drug store, court house, a small little school house, a hotel, and a small dwelling house or two. A buffalo cow laarriated
out east of the town some little ways was a novel one to us at least.

While the size of the town was not so ________ as we had grown up in Nebraska and had seen the small places grow along with us and sure Indianola had grown. New settlers coming in the fall and the coming of the railroad made things go fast but
we must remember the school, church and Sunday school was already well laid out and the people and children as well was glad to have those things that they were well attended by those in or living near here, I sometimes think better then than
now. The added thought is to think of so many of the glad hands extended to the new comers here who have gone to the last home. While gone they are not forgotten. Now looking at the churches and nice homes and trees you have to stop and think,
has all this been done since you first saw Indianola." Kate Dunning Thomas

      1. Jr. Robert H. THOMAS was born in Apr 1893 in Nebraska; was buried in Washington (state).

    1. 8.  Peter Marcellus WOLFE was born on 18 Apr 1822 in West Virginia (son of Jr Philip Augustine WOLFE and Christina MILLER); died on 02 Dec 1884 in Preston, West Virginia.

      Notes:

      Obituary, copy from Aunt Marge

Peter M. Wolfe, born 1821, died D(ec 5 ) 1881. Early in life he gave his heart to God and united with the M.P. Church at Evansville W. Va. Removing shortly after he attached himself to the M.E. Church of which for almost half a century he has
been a worthy and consistant member. He had been in declining health for almost a year before his death, and during the last few weeks of his life his mind was greatly affected. But in his rational moments he expressed himself as (
unreadable)hold by the strong arm of the Savior ( )when death came it found him ready, ( )ned and in his right mind. He was the first of a family of thirteen to break away from the Unitarian faith in which they had been taught. The
others followed his example, and to this day they all, with one exception, are strong men and women in Christ and financially in the church. He leaves a wife and eight childrento mourn their loss; but they, too, thanks to a pious example are on
      their way. W. () W.

Information from IIcia Wolfe's files gives his death as 11/24/1884 in West Virginia.

    3. 10.  Allen N. PUCKETT was born on 19 Feb 1833 in Bell, Ohio (son of Johnathan C. Puckett and Anna Campbell); died on 22 Aug 1921; was buried in Indianola Cemetery.

      Notes:

His name is listed as Alleniah A. Puckett on his son Jon's death certificate. Grandpa Asa Wolfe wrote it down as Allenias on the family photo. I have also seen people writing it as Allen N or Allen Nias.

On his homestead application in 1893, he wrote that he was 60 years old and wrote his name as Allen N Puckett.

According to Ina Wolfe, Allen Puckett was ostracized by his family after he chose to not become a priest.

According to Uncle John Wolfe,"I remember Dad (Asa Wolfe) telling about his granddad Puckett being a healer. He said he saw a man being carried into the Puckett parlor on a stretcher, and he walked out carrying the stretcher. He told
severalother stories in the same frame but not so vivid. There were secret words to transfer the healing power, to the eldest son of the eldest son. Every other generation skipped. Dad was not eligible --not a Puckett.

Do you (Ina Wolfe) remember stories of Dad relating to healing? H seemed reluctant to talk about such because we Moderns did not accept it. We rejected the wisdom of the ancients."

In the 1860 census, Allen is living with his 52 year old mother. It looks like an older married brother is living next door and a Courtney family living two doors down in the next page of the census.

On his homesteading application in 1893 he wrote his name as Allen N Puckett.

Allen married Rebecca COURTNEY on 13 Dec 1863 in Marshall, Highland Co., Ohio. Rebecca was born on 28 Feb 1838 in Marshall, Highland County, Ohio; died on Nov 11, 1905; was buried in Indianola Cemetery. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

      Notes:

Mable Clair Thomas Wright wrote in a letter to her nephew Forrest, posted on 3-31-1947:

"Grandfather's (Abel Thomas) people were Quakers first. Grandfather wanted to play the violin but his father wouldn't let him, because they didn't believe in music. His father said that the Devil was in the violin. They didn't believe in having organs in their churches. They just sang hymns. Even when we went to G.C. to live, the United Presbyterianswho had a church over by Leopolds Hospital, sang without an organ or piano in 1910. "

She also wrote, "I must tell you Grandfahter's nickname was Tuck. He batched when he was going to college and ate mostly beans, and he used to write poetry for people and buy his candy. He was great for candy but had no money for it.

"Cyrus Dunning was born in Connecticut in 1779 and in 1819 was married to Sally Wheeler, a sister of Johnson and Jesse Wheeler. They came to Clarksfield in 1833 and settled on a farm north of Rowland's corners, next to the Wakeman line. After a few years the youngest daughter, Sarah, died of consumption followed, in a few months by the mother who died in 1841 and sister, Mary, who died March 3 1842. This left Mr. Dunning with two sons, Oliver, 18, and Cyrus, 9 years of age. After a few years Oliver married Lucretia Wheeler and they kept house for Mr. Dunning until about 1845, when he married a widow Smith , of Wayne County, Ohio, who had several children, among whom were Orville P. and Lemuel, the latter of whom married Mary Rogers and died in Clarksfield. After some years Mr. and Mrs. Dunning became too old to take care of themselves and she went to live with some of her children in Norwalk, while he lived with his children. In 1854 the old lady died and Mr. Dunning went to Nebraska, with his sons. Cyrus Jr. had married Lucy Wheeler. The father and sons died in Nebraska."

      Notes:

The research from Grandma Alice Mae Thomas Wolfe and Aunt Marjorie Wolfe Hansen says that Lucy's mother was from Ohio. However, in all of the census, Lucy gives her mother's birthplace as New York.

Her brothers, William Wallace and Lemuel (Lem lived near her in Richardson Co., Neb) gave their mother's birthplace as Ohio.

Another researcher along her brother Anson's line gives their mother's birthplace as Homer,Cortland,New York,USA 1785. This would make her considerably older than her husband Asa though.
