      Notes:

This is from a page copied out of a book, but I don't know the title. It also had a copy a photo I have of Tommy, Carrie, Leslie, and Carrie's mother Adeline outside Tommy and Carrie's sod house.

" Alex Lewis, along with his three brothers--Jasper, Tommy and Charlie came by covered wagon to Fairbury (NE) in 1884. Jasper stayed at Fairbury; Charlie went to Oklahoma and Tommy moved to Friendville, now Friend. Later Tommy and his
bridemoved to a farm northwest of Oxford. Leonard Hays now owns the Tommy Lewis Farm.

In 1886 Alex, accompanied by Frank Klein settled on a farm about twelve miles northwest of Oxford (NE). One of their first experiences in batching in the new land was a prairie fire. Noticing that a fire was appraching from the south, they
hurriedly took their belongings from the house, piled them on the ground and plowed a fire guard around them. The freakish thing was that the fire traveled so swiftly, it burned all the grass under the house since it sat on a foundation of six
large rocks but did not burn a single stick of lumber in the house.

Alex journeyed back to Effingham, Illinois in 1893 and married Hannah Burris from Wilkinson, Indiana. On their return to Nebraska that summer, they lived in a sod house with a lean-to attached to the house, one-half mile east of the Union
Church where Argyl and Edmund (Billy) were born. Later the family moved further south on the creek into a one room house on the present farm where Edmund and Velma now live. This home was the birthplace of Dorthy, who died in infancy, Irene
and Ralph. Ralph lost his life in an airplane accident in 1955. Irene married Walter Wanner. Their home was blessed with one daughter, Waldene. Edmund married Velma Fuchs. Two sons, Charles A. and Kent added bliss to this home. Kent passed
away in his senior year in high school in the same accident that took the life of his Uncle Ralph. Argyll married Leola Flodine from Stamford.

Mrs. Alex Lewis and Mrs. Joe Vopat organized a Sunday School at Hardscrabble School in the late 1890's. Sunday School and Church were held there until 1908 when the Union Church was built. Alex Lewis served as one of the first trustees for
the Union Church. Mrs. Lewis passed away in 1921 and Mr. Lewis in 1930."
