4. | George Dennis Kilmer was born on 28 Apr 1821 in Canada West London District (son of Henry Kilmer and Mary Dennis). Notes:
The information on this descendant line came from Brian Gaber (hodag@t-online.de). He has additional information on the Kilmer ancestral line another 5 generations.
There is some question as to the spelling of the family name. Almost all descendants of the Palatine
(German) immigrants from upstate New York have used the "Kilmer" spelling. The tribute to George D. Kilmer (Harriet's father) in 1900 used the spelling "Killmer". The descendants of George Dennis Kilmer that I have located all use the
"Kilmer" spelling, so I have decided to use the "one l" version throughout this genealogy, regardless of whether the family may have at one time used the "Killmer" version or not.
The original German spelling of the name is not clear. In early records it appears as "Kelmer", "Külmer", or even "Kühlmann". Most Palatine Germans altered their names, voluntarily or involuntarily, to simplify spelling and pronunciation
in their new English speaking settlements in North America.
In June 1837 George enlisted to take part in the Canadian Rebellion, but was not in any battle. (David Glenn Kilmer) In 1840 he started a three year apprenticeship as a tanner. George married Ellen Westover in 1843 and continued his
work as a tanner until 1853. The thought of owning his own farm lured George Killmer to Dodge county, Wisconsin, where he spent the summer preparing his farm for the arrival of his wife and children, whom he brought from Canada that fall.
After ten years of farming in Wisconsin the family removed to Blue Earth Co., Minnesota. Moved to Wisconsin in 1852, and to Minnesota in 1862 - David Glenn Kilmer
The 1860 census shows George and wife in Coloma, Waushara Co., WI
