      William "Carter" Cuppy

      HUMBOLDT ? William "Carter" Cuppy, 79, of Humboldt died at 5 a.m. Friday (Jan. 2, 1987) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

      The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shrader Funeral Home, Arcola, with Rev. Robert Clark, Mattoon, officiating. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today.

      He was born Dec. 15, 1907, in Humboldt, a son of Arla and Ida May Cuppy. He married Elnora May Payne at Springfield in 1929. She died in 1984.

      Surviving are one daughter, Connie Cuppy of Humboldt; one sister, Nancy Melody of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

      One sister preceded him in death.

      Mr. Cuppy was the former owner and operator of Cuppy & Wyeth Grain Elevator for 45 years. He was a member of the Crossroads Church of Christ and a member of the Mattoon Moose Lodge.

      In Thomas Jefferson Lewis's photo album, there are two photos of a young Ulysses S. Grant. On the back of one it says Army - Tenessee. The photos are worn and dirty.

      John Daniel Lewis served in the 25th Indiana Regiment which fought under Grant in the Battle of Shiloh.
