Elizabeth Shackelton

Notes:

In the Windemuth Family Heritage it states " Elizabeth Shackelton was a grand-daughter of Thomas and Nancy Robbins of England who were persons of considerable note. He was a man of letters and she was a lady in every sense of the word,
according to the standard of the time and place. Nancy Robbins wore the finest silks, purple and crimson corsets, and never on any occasion was known to engage in manual labor. When Elizabeth was married at age 18 she spread upon the grass
100 yards of fine white linen, the work of her own hands. Her mother-in-law then remarked to her, "Elizabeth, was it possible that you made all this linen yourself?""

It is more likely that Elizabeth was a GREAT granddaughter of the Robbins, and her mother Mary Ogden was their granddaughter.

Elizabeth married (George) Abraham Wintermute on 28 Feb 1810 in Sussex County, New Jersey. (George) (son of George Wintermute and Nancy\Anna Arason) was born on 13 Nov 1784 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died on 23 Aug 1848 in Elizabethtown, Licking County, Ohio; was buried in 1848 in Buried with wife in Elizabethtown Cemetery. 1. Mary Jane Wintermute was born on 10 Jul 1808; died on 28 Apr 1891 in Pennsylvania.
2. Nancy Wintermute died in in Elizabethtown.
3. Elsie\Elsy Maria Wintermute was born on 14 Feb 1814 in Fayette County, Pennsvylania; died on 2 Apr 1868 in McLean County, Illinois.
4. John Wintermute was born on 20 Jan 1822 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania; died on 3 Dec 1868 in American House, Newark, Ohio.
5. Eliza Wintermute was born on 12 Jan 1823 in Fayettte County, Pennsylvania; died on 30 Jun 1899 in brother Alfred's Newark, Ohio home.
6. Sarah Wintermute was born on 14 Aug 1827; died on 24 Sep 1867 in Marysville.
7. Alfred Wintermute was born on 25 Mar 1825 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Benjamin married Mary Ogden. Mary (daughter of Gabriel Ogden and Mary Shotwell) was born in 1758; died on 19 May 1838. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Tradition says this (Mrs) Mary Shackelton (whose maiden name was Mary Ogden), the second wife, was very proud; that when dressed for church she would wrap herself in a sheet to avoid contact with her husband while on the way, fearing he
would disarrange her toilet. She would array him in ruffles, a cocked hat and knee breeches, a costume he was unused to, and take him into distinguished society. This marriage was said not to have been pleasant or congenial, and a
separation occurred.



She had eight children by her former husband, Shackelton, named as follows: Sarah, Lydia, Elizabeth, John, Mary, Rachel, Robert, and Benjamin. They lived between Blairstown and Hope. Mary, their mother, died May 19, 1830, and was buried
near her residence in a cemetery close by a brick school house. Arason's widow says she understands Shackelton's name to have been Benjamin, and that he died previous to the birth of his youngest son, who was named for him on that account.
