Moses is listed in "The Doane Family", Vol. 1, pg. 237. He lived in Humberstone, Ontario where he had a farm. Mary C. Doan-Goodchild of Ahmerstberg, Ontario, claims in a letter that, "....My great grandfather Moses Doan, was a Canadian
soldier in the war of 1812 - got shot in the chin, carried the scar to his grave". At a Doan reunion at the farm of Charles W. Doan, Bay City, Michigan, July 20, 1933, the following poem was credited to Moses by Ada Cordella Stuart Carmen. "
Thou mighty God, who reigns above, Great God of Mercy and of Love, My mind, my soul is sore oppressed, With heart felt sorrow in my breast. What shall I do? Where shall I go to find relief? I do not know. I labor from day to day. Sometimes I
read, sometimes I pray, To the most gracious God above, That He, my troubles may remove. But the deep sorrows in my heart, Lo, like the ocean cannot rest. He that can calm the raging sea, If I have faith can comfort me, Said to the tempest,
`Peace, be still!', And was obedient to His will. Oh, Thou my Saviour and my friend, On Thy mercy I depend. For Thou cans't comfort grant to me. All things are possible with Thee. All things we need while here below, Tis in Thy power to
bestow. Awake, Asleep, at home, abroad, I am surronded with my God. The only comfort I did see, It was Thy will to take away. It was my dear and loving wife, The only comfort of my life. With Angels may she now be blessed, Where I hope shall
ever rest. And when my time on earth is done, And I leave all beneath the sun, May we meet in that happy place, And see each other face to face. And when we meet on that blessed shore, No length of time will part us more. Our sorrows cease, our
troubles o'er, Where we will rest forever more. Farewell my friends and children dear. For I may never meet you here!"

    1. 8.  JOSEPH DOAN was born on 11 Apr 1752 in Plumstead, Bucks Co., Penn.; died on 4 Jun 1844 in Walpole, Haldimand Co, Ont., Canada.

      Notes:

Joseph is #228, The Doane Family, Vol. I, p. 233. Joseph received an education above that of the average young man at the time. He taught the school in his neighborhood. His name appears on the list of the outlaw Doanes. He was captured by
a posse after a skirmish and after having been shot in the cheek. On 30 March 1784, he was arraigned, tried, and sentenced to be hanged. While awaiting the execution, he managed to escape from prison to New Jersey where he found refuge. He
taught school there under an assumed name. The Federal Gov't had placed a reward for his capture. One night, in a tavern, he overheard a man say that he would shoot any of the Doanes on sight just for the reward. Joseph quietly settled his
school bills and made ready to move to Canada. Before going, he returned to Bucks Co. to say farewell to his old home. A neighbor recognized him and threw him to the ground. During the scuffle, Joseph managed to retrieve his pocket knife,
which he opened with his teeth. He wounded his assailant in the neck, but before he left, Joseph bound up the man's wounds, got him to his feet, and directed him to a nearby house. Then, Joseph left for Canada. In Canada, he settled first in
Humberstone Twp, of Welland Co.living near the lake shore near Fort Erie. He resumed his teaching, for which he soon gained an excellent reputation. About 1815, he moved some 40 miles away to the township of Walpole where he bought a 200 acre
farm of which he claimed was to lie "in as pretty a section as can be found in all of Canada". Early on, he was known to be an outspoken man with an inveterate hatred of Americans. When the American Army landed there during the War of 1812, he
was pointed out as a man inimical to the American interests, and was again put in prison, this time at Greenbush, N.Y. He stayed in prison for 18 months. In 1823, Joseph returned to Bucks Co., Pa. to visit relatives and to obtain retribution
for the confiscation of his father's lands. He was appearently unsuccessful. A description of him at his time is contained in a letter by a neighbor in Plumstead, Mr. J.S. Kratz, "I now come to Joseph who is the only one I ever saw, a portly,
good looking, active, intelligent man of 72 years, straight as an Indian, very nearly six feet high and had travelled on foot all the way from Canada to Plumstead, a distance of over four hundred miles.".

JOSEPH married MARY DOAN in 1780. MARY was born on 27 Jul 1766 in Plumstead, Bucks Co., Penn.; died on 19 Sep 1852 in Walpole, Haldimand Co, Ont., Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    2. 9.  MARY DOAN was born on 27 Jul 1766 in Plumstead, Bucks Co., Penn.; died on 19 Sep 1852 in Walpole, Haldimand Co, Ont., Canada.

      Notes:

Mary had become blind late in her life through cancer on her face. She with her daughter's home, Mary Waggoner, in Wampole. The cause of death was, supposedly, a fall over a chair. Mary is listed in The Doane Family, Vol. I, p.133

      Children:
      1. 4. MOSES DOAN was born on 24 Dec 1781 in Plumstead, Bucks Co., Penn.; died on 2 Jun 1857.

    3. 10.  John\Johannes Wintemute was born on 25 Oct 1747 in Walpack, Sussex, New Jersey (son of The Emigrator Georg Philip Windemoed and Maria Juliana Huber); died on 15 Feb 1824 in Humberstone, Welland, Ontario, Canada.

      Notes:

Education: sold farm & moved to Humberston. Dtrs

Maiden Name: married men named Strawn (2), Moses Done,

      TEXT: Stoffer, & Dennis.

He was baptized 25 October 1747. It is stated in "The Wintermute Family History" that John married in New Jersey a Miss Decker or Windecker and that she died there. Both names were common in the northern part of Sussex County. It should be
noted, however, that a family of Windecker's, also tory, lived in the Wyoming Valley before the Revolution not far from where the Wintermute's lived. John's name appears on the tax lists for the Exeter District of that Valley for 1776 and
1777. He served in Butler's Rangers, and at the reduction of that Corps he settled in Bertie. His household is listed in a return of the Loyalists in Captain Bernard Frey's Company of the Rangers at Niagara 30 November 1783. [Haldimand
Papers B105-A:381] The list names Corporal John Wintmot aged 27 and Mary Wintmot 24 followed by three entries with the name Wintmot written, but for which no first names or ages are given. If the age given for John was 37, it would be more in
      accordance with his baptismal record.

A land petition from him dated 9 July 1795 [W3:137] states that he served in Butler's Rangers as a corporal and that he has a family consisting of five children. No mention was made of a wife. The following certificate of J. Ball, J.P., on
file with the petition, indicates a second marriage for John. "Newark, 20 March 1797. I do hereby certify that corporal John Wintermute served in Butler's Rangers during the was; that he had a family before the year 1789 consisting of a wife
and eight children; that his wife is the daughter of a Loyalist Hannah Lybs who came in the year 1778".

The "Loyalist Hannah Lybs" can only mean Hannah Sypes, or Sipes, who did enter Niagara in 1778. This would mean that John had married a sister of the wife of his brother Peter, but additional evidence should be found to corroborate such a
marriage. It is noted, however, that two of John's daughters were Hannah and Eve, names which were used in the Sipes family.

John subsequently married Nancy Leopard (leppard, etc) but whether this was before or after he moved to Humberstone is not known. Documents on file with Nancy's land petition [L:3:35] indicate that she was married to John after 9 May 1797 and
more likely after 1800. A power of attorney dated at Humberstone, 22 October 1832 states that "I, Nancy Wintemute of Humberstone, widow of John Wintemute late of same place, yeoman, deceased, and daughter of William Leopard, at his birth of
Bucks County in the State of Pennsylvania, known before marriage as Nancy Leopard, do appoint Andrew Mercer of the town of York as my attorney to receive for me title to the south part of Lot 23 Concession 4 of Scarboro' containing 100 acres".
Witnesses were John Wintemute (Jr) and Aaron Doan.

John\Johannes married Mary Decker \ Windecker before 1772 in New Jersey. Mary died in 1774 in New Jersey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    4. 11.  Mary Decker \ Windecker died in 1774 in New Jersey.

      Notes:

Kelsey Jones mentions that in a list of Butlers Rangers that naturally included the Wintermute boys, Hendrick "Henry" Windecker was also on the list.

Besides the notorious Windecker at the Battle of Wyoming, I would like to know more about this family.

      1. Margaret Wintemute was born in 1776 in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania.
      2. Eve Wintemute was born in 1779 in Ontario, Canada; died on 2 Feb 1852 in Roscoe, IL.
